Local artist and illustrator Julia Wald is this year’s DASH GRANT recipient! We were really excited about her story synapsis and hyper-color drawing style of her upcoming comic, Uncle Scam’s Army Navy Surplus, an autobiography of their first job out of school in Buffalo, working at an army navy surplus store where they sold military gear to doomsday preppers, zombie cosplayers, and neo Nazis. This first part of a much longer story will premiere at Short Run on Nov. 5th.
Pages from Julia’s upcoming comic, Uncle Scam’s Army Navy Surplus. Julia will receive $500, a spot in our upcoming art show at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, mentorship, and a free half table at the festival.
Julia’s illustration work has been published in The Baffler, Current Affairs, and The Stranger among others, and her artwork has been shown in galleries across the US, including at Steve Gilbert Studio, Food Art Collection, CoCA Seattle, and the Seattle Emerging Arts Fair.
Julia is a member-owner of Push/Pull and a member of the Society of Illustrators. Originally from Buffalo, NY, she holds degrees in art and chemistry from Buffalo State College. She currently lives and works in Seattle, WA.
