Comics and Conservation: A Teen Workshop in the Park with Mita Mahato, co-sponsored by City of Seattle Office of Arts & Culture (for ages 12-17)
Seward Park (Meet in front of the Audubon Center off the main parking lot of Seward Park)
Local comics and cut paper artist Mita Mahato will guide teen participants through a variety of comics-related exercises based upon the natural elements and unnatural disturbances (litter, noise pollution, etc.) they encounter at the park, making mini comics about water pollution, climate change, city parks preservation, environmental justice, and other topical issues. No drawing experience required. Supplies and recycled hand-bound sketchbook provided. Enrollment limited to 12 participants (all participants must register prior to class).

Observe comic artist Jason T. Miles (Insect Bath, Love Wins, Dead Ringer, Lightening Snake) pushing ink around in many ways! Jason creates unique textures and varied, dynamic lines with basic drawing tools (sharpies, white-out pens, gel pens). He’ll show you lots of “pen hacks” and encourage you to find your favorite tool/paper combo and see what sparks your joy in drawing! All supplies provided. Register here.

Riso Printing with Paper Press Punch

Risograph printing is a unique and affordable way to add color to your comics, prints, artist books, and zines. Participants will learn the basics of Risograph printing with a brief overview of the mechanics and quirks of the duplicating process. Through a hands-on demo using a variety of mark-making materials, we will discuss registration, color management, file prep, and materials best suited for making the most excellent prints and books. Stop-Motion Animation 101 with Clyde Petersen

Learn the basics of stop-motion animation with Seattle Animator and Stranger Genius nominee Clyde Petersen, whose recent film, “Torrey Pines” is a cut paper animation feast for the eyes. Screen Printing with Fogland Studios

Learn screen printing techniques to take your books to the next level! We will use your hand drawn elements (emailed to instructor in advance), screen print them onto paper and then assemble mini-zines for the class! Everyone walks out with more experience and a finished book! Fogland Studios make books in the style of Le Cagibi and Le Dernier Cre: sculptural, multi-color/multi-layered works of art! Tidal Tales – a low tide nature exploration and comics workshop with Seattle Nature Schools (for ages 10 and up)
Lincoln Park, West Seattle
Local science educator and zine artist Emilie Bess will lead youth age 10-18 in an exploration of the plants and animals that can be found at low tide in the Puget Sound. After exploring the intertidal zone, we will create mini-comics and mini-zines that feature our observations and questions, info on animal behavior and life cycles, and stories of fantastical nature adventures.
